Know Your Coffee! The foundations of most coffee shop drinks
It is crazy to think how much you can do with coffee beans! Over the years, there have been more and more different ways to have your coffee, but what goes into them and how are they done?
Today we are giving you the lowdown on how to take coffeeshop expressions and turn them into homemade cups of gold! The main ingredient is coffee (you can check out our range here) so that's the foundation to build upon.
Black coffee is as simple as it comes. All you need is ground coffee beans steeped in hot water then served straight away. Although it is a very simple process, it relies solely on the quality and taste of the coffee bean so find beans you enjoy!
In simple terms, an espresso is a hot concentrated shot of coffee. It usually uses darker roasts which are then finely ground under high pressure to create a short strong cup for you to enjoy, or as you will find out, can be added to make other types of coffee!
A cappuccino is made using a shot of espresso, then topped up with more foam than steamed milk. It is often finished with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or cinnamon on top. This is a great coffee to experiment syrups with, as the milk will really help balance the contrasting flavours of coffee and the syrups.
A flat white is essentially a cappuccino but without the foam or cocoa powder. It is made by mixing a shot of espresso then topping up with steamed milk.
One of the more popular coffee choices out there, the latte consists of a shot of espresso and steamed milk with just a touch of foam. Similar to the cappuccino, it is a great coffee to try with different syrups or flavours!
The Americano is very similar to your standard black coffee, however the americano consists of an espresso shot diluted in hot water rather than it being pressed out all at once. We would definitely recommend putting the espresso into your cup first before the hot water!
Perfect for those with more of a sweet tooth, the mocha is a cracking blend of bitter coffee and sweet chocolate. A mocha is made by mixing a chocolate espresso shot with steamed milk and foam. It is a great midpoint between a Latte and a hot chocolate!
Want to make these yourself at home? A good place to start would be getting yourself some quality coffee beans, which we have here at Nelson & Norfolk! Click here to check out our fantastic collection.
